I lost my mother on 2 October 2020. We spoke every day, for years. I checked in on her, to check she was feeling well and was okay. At the same time, unbeknownst to me, she was checking on me, making sure I was safe and asking where I was (I was a digital nomad for 15 years!). After she was gone, I found myself wondering: who was going to check on me? Who is going to know where I am?
We often hear stories of people living alone who pass away and are not discovered for days or even weeks. What about elderly people living on their own? Single people without close family nearby? Who checks in on them? Who notices if they're struggling, lonely or simply having a difficult day? There were times when my mother was the only person I spoke to all day, and the same was true for her.
So I created Coucou. Coucou checks in on you. In French, "Coucou" is a warm and informal way of saying, "Hi darling, how are you?" The name came to me while I was based in France, and it felt perfect for what I wanted to create.
There are many people in the world who are alone, and many who have nobody regularly checking on them. Now there's Coucou.
I hope it brings you the same peace of mind that inspired me to create it.
