I lost my mother on 2nd October 2020. She was two months shy of turning 92 years old. But one of the things that I realised I had lost was my anchor. You see I would call her every day, mainly to check that she had woken up for the day and to check on her mental health and that she was OK. And in a way I was getting the same thing, she was checking that I was alive and safe, checked where I was (I am a digital nomad!) and that I was OK too. But now she's gone and now I'm thinking who's going to check on me?
We hear stories of people that have died in their sleep and aren't discovered for days, weeks and sometimes even years. What about all the elderly people that live alone? What about all the single people that live alone or that don't have family? What do all these people do? Who checks in on them? Who checks in on their mood? Are they feeling lonely? Have they spoken to anyone that day? I had days where the only person I spoke to was my mother, and visa versa.
So, I created Coucou. Coucou checks on u. ‘Coucou’ is French for ‘hi darling, how are you?’ a very informal and endearing way of saying ‘hello, how are you?’. It was indeed a lightbulb moment when the name "Coucou" popped into my head, as I was in France at the time, and it is the perfect french word for this. There is also a wonderful serendipity about the names associated with this service. Coucou is from France, my favourite country. And a Coucou user, a Couee (properly spelled Cooee) is from Australia, the country I was born in. A wonderful coincidence? Or simply meant to be.
There are a lot of people lonely and/or alone in the world, and a lot of people don't have anyone to check on them. So now there’s Coucou. I hope you join and benefit from Coucou. I know I will!
